How Jenna Perusich and Melissa McCarthy started their home improvement careers

Throughout college, Jenna Perusich focused entirely on studying acting, but behind the scenes she was helping friends and family renovate their own homes. “[Renovating] was always something that I did,” she told The List. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I should do that extra. Design should be my daily job. I never had that thought.”

However, once Perusich took the big step into the entertainment capital, she found herself getting more involved in interior design. “I moved to Los Angeles, and when Melissa and I reconnected, we both found it like a natural connection, a natural passion,” she explained.

It all started when Melissa McCarthy started redesigning rooms in her own homes. “I would take over, manage those projects and work with her,” Perusich said. But these small projects quickly began to turn into much larger long-term projects.

Then came the Property Brothers’ “Celebrity IOU” series. With his cousin McCarthy by his side, Perusich designed a whole new living space for his parents – and when the episode ended, it sparked a passion for paint swatches, countertop swatches and beyond. . “Some call it a passion, others an obsession,” joked Perusich.

After signing on to host “The Great Giveback with Melissa McCarthy and Jenna Perusich,” everything seemed to be set in motion for these two actors-turned-designers. “I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever aspired to,” Perusich said. “But it just felt right to me.”

New episodes of “The Great Giveback with Melissa McCarthy and Jenna Perusich” air Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET on HGTV.
