Household chores are a necessary, though dreaded by many, part of everyday life. There seems to be an endless list of things to do to maintain a home and keep it running smoothly. Tasks like caring for children and pets, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry need to be done no matter how busy or tired one is.
There are, however, advantages to performing these tasks. According to a study published in Neurology in July 2022, performing household chores may reduce the risk of dementia. Research has shown that a clean, well-organized home can positively affect a person’s mental health. Many people also feel an internal sense of accomplishment when they complete tasks and check them off a list.
But how much time do these household chores consume? home warranty company american shield looked at 2021 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics US time use survey to see how much time the average American spends on daily chores.
The annual US Time Use Survey measured the average time per day that people over the age of 15 worked, performed household chores, and participated in sports and leisure activities. Times have been rounded to the nearest minute. It is also important to note that many tasks are not performed on a daily basis and some, such as childcare, are only performed by a subset of the population.
The survey revealed that the majority of people (86% of women and 71% of men) spent time daily on household chores. On average, people did more housework on weekends than on weekdays. The only task that more people reported doing on weekdays was food preparation and cleaning.
The results also showed that women are more likely to do housework and spend more time on it than men. On an average drudgery day, women spent two hours and 42 minutes on household chores, while men spent two hours and 12 minutes.
