MP: Solving flash flood problem in Jalan Menglembu-Lahat

The FLASH flooding over Jalan Menglembu-Lahat in Ipoh must be addressed urgently, said Steven Chaw, member of the Menglembu assembly.

He said the flooding incident, with water reaching knees, happened at least twice a year.

“I have received many calls and complaints from the public asking for a solution.

“We believe the flooding is due to a shallow drain under the bridge which cannot accommodate large volumes of water from Sungai Kledang, especially during the monsoon,” he said at a conference. press in its service center in Ipoh.

Chaw said he informed Ipoh City Council and the state government about it, but no action has been taken so far.

“At the recent state assembly in August, I highlighted not only one but two other areas of Menglembu that are severely affected by flash floods.

“Batu Gajah MP V. Sivakumar also raised the issue with Dewan Rakyat,” he added.

Sivakumar, who was present at the press conference, said the matter had been brought to the attention of Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

“On the basis of the written response received, the Minister declared that the matter fell within the competence of the local authorities.

“He (Fadillah) also said that relevant departments, including the State Department of Drainage and Irrigation, had not received any reports of flash floods in the area.

“We even have photos and people complaining about the floods,” he added.

When contacted, a city council spokesperson said the flooding was due to garbage stuck in a narrow drain.

“The flood zone is located between residential and industrial areas.

“The large amount of waste along with the high volume of incoming water is the reason why flash floods occur frequently,” he said.

“We plan to improve the drainage system there as a long-term solution,” he added.
