The internet blames mom for not paying for chores

The internet has slammed a mother who mocked her daughter for asking if she could be paid to do the dishes.

In one post that went viral in the infamous Reddit forum, “AmITheA**hole,” u/Late-Raise9846 asked the community if they were being too tough or on the right track.

In one investigation conducted in 2019, two-thirds of parents give money to their children in the hope that they will get a positive learning lesson when it comes to household chores. According to the survey, the average allowance for children is $30 per week.

The Redditor is a single mother and raising her two children, aged eight and fifteen. One night the girl went to the OP (also known as the original poster) to ask if she could get paid to wash the dishes. The OP laughed causing the girl to scream.

A Redditor asked the “AmILeA**hole” community if she should be considered the asshole for laughing at her daughter when she asked if she could get paid to do the dishes.

“I told her she could get paid when she reimbursed me for all the food and clothes I had bought for her, and for providing her with free accommodation. She got mad at me and went to his room,” she explained.

The Redditor’s other kid said maybe the mom was “too harsh” and it looks like thousands of Reddit users agree.

“You are legally and morally bound to provide these things for him. A chores allowance is very nice if it can fit the budget. It gives an older child some pocket money and he can learn how to manage his money “, wrote u/Aunty_Fascist in the top comment with 18,000 upvotes.

In response to the above comment, u/throwaboato said, “To say the kids should pay you back for providing the basics of life is bluntly to say you resent their existence.”

“There are a lot of ways you could have handled this. Tell her you can’t afford to pay her, tell her the chores are the responsibility of everyone living in the house, tell her you would be happy to help her find a job she can do outside the home to earn money But telling her she does chores REIMBURSES you for being her mother?

The mother garnered little support, as the comments continued.

“You think your child is supposed to pay you back THE NAKED MINIMUM? Food? Clothes? Housing? You created this person for shit’s sake,” u/outfluenced wrote.

“You could have taken this opportunity to have a mature conversation about finances,” U/Proscuitto1 commented. “Instead, you made fun of your child and told him he was a burden. I’m sure that’s how she saw it. It was you who chose to put children in the world. You owe them everything and they owe you nothing.”
